COVID-19 PANDEMIC: FRSC ARRESTS 144 FOR OVERLOADING OF PASSENGERS, ORDERS ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORT OPERATORS TO USE PASSENGERS MANIFEST, ACTIVATE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

In Pursuant to the need to mitigate the spread of corona virus amongst passengers, the Federal Road Safety Corps has arrested a total of 144 offenders for overloading of vehicles in persons and ordered all categories of transporters to ensure full compliance with the provisions of Regulation 108 (1) of the National Road Traffic Regulation 2012 on compulsory passenger manifest; while directing all public transport operators to imbibe necessary precautionary measures in their parks and terminals as failure to adhere strictly to this order will attract the necessary sanctions. The Chairman Senate Committee on Information Senator Danladi Sankara has called on Nigerians to be weary of fake news on the Coronavirus especially on the social media. Senator Sankara in a statement observed that there are a number of unrealistic stories on the virus which seems to create panic instead of precaution. He pointed out the story making rounds few days ago alleging that some members of the National Assembly tested positive to the Virus as one of such fake news. House urges care for inmates on coronavirus

The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Correctional Services to take urgent steps to protect inmates at the various correctional centres nationwide from coronavirus, also known as COVID 19.. The House Committee on Reformatory Institutions says it is imperative for the government to ensure that those in confinement are protected from the virus at this critical time. The committee called on Nigerian Correctional Services to  put in place urgent measures to safeguard inmates and staff of the correctional service  from contracting coronavirus, which is currently ravaging the world.

NESG has revealed that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), may lead to one of two outcomes; a win-win outcome for all African countries, or a zero-sum game in which the gain of one country becomes the loss of another and vice versa. NESG in its, “Impact assessment study and economy-wide implications of the AfCFTA on the Nigerian economy,” released on Monday, said implementation of the continental agreement will trigger a surge in imports across sectors of the Nigerian economy. The major concern, according to NESG, is the issue of dumping and strict enforcement of the Rules of Origin (RoO), as enshrined in the AfCFTA framework document. The relatively large market size of Nigeria makes the economy a target for dumping. To protect the economy from the dumping of inferior and substandard products, the report suggests that the RoO needs to be well-strengthened and tightened. President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has condemned the gun attack in Kaduna on the convoy of the Emir of Potiskum, Yobe State, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram.  At statement by the special adviser to the president of the Senate on media Ola Awoniyi said Gunmen on Tuesday night attacked the convoy of the Emir around Maraban Jos on Kaduna-Zaria road, killing some of the Emir's aides and leaving others injured. Gov.Emmanuel expressed satisfaction with the efforts being put in place by the Federal Government through the BPE to resolve the lingering legal tussle on the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) at Ikot-Abasi which is in a moribund state.
