House passes emergency bill on covid-19
The house of representatives has passed the emergency economic stimulus bill 2020 which made provisions to put in place measures to alleviate financial burden on citizens in response to economic downturn occasioned by the coronavirus outbreak.
The bill which witnessed accelerated passage, as it went through first, second and third reading at plenary Tuesday was sponsored by the speaker femi gbajabiamila and entire leadership of the house.
Other features of the bill include suspension of import duty on medical items needed to tackle the disease, protect employment status of nigerians who might become unemployed, and provide temporary tax relief to companies and individuals to alleviate economic consequences.
Plenary also adopted a number of resolutions following a motion by house leadership on coronavirus.
Among the resolutions are a call on the federal government to use federal government colleges across the country as emergency isolation centers for coronavirus disease.
In the meantime, house has adjourned plenary to 7th April 2020, but may reconvene within the period should there arise an emergency.
